The Story of Jack

Warning: some of the videos that show Jack's condition in the early days might be triggering.

24th November, 2024

Jack was found abandoned in the small own of Petrich, Bulgaria in late 2024. His condition was severe, and his situation was mysterious, as he showed signs of treatment but he was still found alone in the middle of nowhere.

The Foundation learned about him from social media and we took him in to see what we can do. This is his story so far.

Jack was blind, with bloody swelling in both eyes, knotty blisters across the body, a swollen digestive tract that constantly made him nauseous, breathing problems, and a fragment of a hunter's bullet in the hind paw. He had no parasites and it seemed someone tried to take care about him, and what actually happened to him is unknown.

Initial testing indicates his condition is probably cutaneous lymphoma, a rare type of cancer.

Jack from Petrich today!

He has two courses of chemo-therapy, and on the 3rd of January we'll do another one in the Multi-profile Veterinary Clinic in Gorna Banya with dr. Mitev.

The eyes are still not working, but I think one of his eyes still has a chance, almost all of the tumors on his body have shrunk thanks to the therapy.

The last bill in the clinic was a little over 400 BGN (240 USD), we need to do more tests with every visit, because last time he had a pulmonary infection and we needed to do a round of antibiotics.

He takes probiotics every day and the only food that he an eat is veterinary gastrointestinal therapy food, which costs 11 BGN (7 USD) for 400 gr. Jack eats two cans a day. If anyone wants to help with the upcoming expenses and food, please do it through the Foundation's bank account or the website.

Tomorrow I'm driving urgently to the Multi-profile Veterinary Clinic in Gorna Banya. For everyone who remembers Jack from Petrich, the little doggy without eyes, our Foundation took him in and got him medical attention. The doctors discovered he's suffering from an oncological sickness, Canine Transmissive Venerial Tumor, and after several rounds of chemo-therapy, he entered remission.

Five months later, Jack once again has a problem, one of his eyes got swollen heavily in just a few days, he was very sick today, crying from pain. The video starts with him as he is now.

We'll know more tomorrow. He's an amazing doggy, but he's blind and no one adopted him. He'll probably be in the shelter until the end of his life, but I'll do anything in my power to help him feel good and not be in pain.

Jack remains in the Multi-profile Veterinary Clinic, his eye will undergo surgery tomorrow.

In practice he's blind with both eyes, after they were closed by tumors, but it seemed as though he could see, like any other doggy.

It seems he injured his eye by bumping into something, which caused an abscess.

The good news is that the cancer hasn't returned, like I feared, but the bad news is that the eye will need to be removed.

We did an ultrasound on the other eye, the lens is obscured and he can't see, but at least the eye can remain.

On Monday I'll need to drive to Sofia again to take him back, hopefully everything will go smoothly tomorrow.

Jack, who had no eyes, and turned out to have cancer.

One year later he's deteriorating again, he can't breathe well, several tumors appeared. He was in remission after four rounds of chemo, but I'm afraid the cancer may have returned. Tomorrow I'll call the Multi-Profile Veterinary Clinic to book an appointment with dr Mitev.

We're just leaving the Multi-Profile Veterinary Clinic and heading back to Vratsa.

In two hours we did blood tests, biopsy of to tumors, and the result is that the cancer has returned.

Right now the boy has breathing problems, needed a scanner, but we don't have the funds, so we did a first round of chemo, more tests and manipulations, and I had to pay with donations for food.

Next Thursday, 11th of December, we'll be driving again for a second round of chemotherapy. The blood tests are good for his condition and he definitely has a chance. Please, anyone who can, help us out with a donation with "Jack" in the subject line.

We'll keep posting updates about Jack as his situation progresses.

If you can, please consider helping us support animals in need by making a donation using any of the following methods. Any amount helps us take care of abandoned animals, pay medical bills and rescue animals in distress.
